The First International Day on Clean Energy

January 26, 2024, marks the inaugural International Day on Clean Energy, aimed at raising awareness and mobilizing actions to transition to clean energy in a fair and inclusive manner, benefiting humanity and the planet.

On August 25, 2023, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 77/327, declaring January 26th as the "International Day on Clean Energy." This date also commemorates the establishment of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in 2009. By choosing January 26th to establish the International Day on Clean Energy, the 193 member states of the UN General Assembly acknowledge the pivotal role of IRENA in accelerating the global transition to renewable energy.


The first International Day on Clean Energy is a significant milestone in our collective commitment to a sustainable future. It signifies a global celebration of clean energy and its critical role in achieving a fair and inclusive energy transition. The day is dedicated to advocating for clean and renewable energy, providing a unified platform for governments, businesses, and individuals worldwide to accelerate the shift towards a more sustainable and efficient energy system.
